Pittsburgh Xiaobo Waist Drum Dance Group has been performing since 2016. Their signature dance is the waist drum group dance, a traditional, joyful Chinese folk dance. With red wooden drums strapped around their waists, drumsticks with red ribbons dancing in the air, and cymbals clashing, they dance to festive, upbeat music, making for an exciting performance. Waist drum dancing originated in Ansai, northwest China 2,000 years ago for harvest festival celebrations, and is now considered a “Chinese national intangible cultural heritage.”
The group is often invited to perform in Grand Opening ceremonies for various events, such as in Las Vegas, at Seattle’s Space Needle, Cleveland City Hall, the Pittsburgh Playhouse, the Carnegie Music Hall, Kennywood, Pittsburgh’s Market Square, the Cranberry Township Community Center’s Diversity Festival, the Ross Township Community Center, international festivals, parades, churches, and nursing homes.
Many newspapers have featured their performance stories and photos, including the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, NEXT Pittsburgh, the Cranberry Eagle, the Morgantown Dominion Post, the Erie Chinese Journal, and the Shanghai Overseas Journal. They are welcomed by warm audiences who often clap along to the beat of the drum music. Their unique and joyful waist drum dance is getting popular. This year, they have already booked 12 performances in January and February alone! The group is flexible and able to adjust to the needs of the event organizers, bringing either a small group of 8–10, or a large group of 20–30, drummers.
匹兹堡小波腰鼓队自 2016 年起开始演出。队伍以充满喜庆与力量的腰鼓群舞为特色：红色木腰鼓系在腰间，红绸鼓槌翻飞， 锣鼓铿锵作响，伴随欢乐热烈的音乐翩然起舞，场面十分震撼。腰鼓舞起源于两千多年前中国西北安塞的丰收庆典，如今被列为 中国国家级非物质文化遗产。
小波腰鼓队多次受邀在各类活动和开幕式上表演，足迹遍及拉斯维加斯、美国西雅图太空针塔、克利夫兰市政厅、匹兹堡剧院、 卡内基音乐厅、肯尼伍德乐园、匹兹堡市中心 Market Square、Cranberry 社区中心多元文化节、Ross Township 社区中心、 各类国际文化节、游行、教堂以及养老院等。
